What happens on my first visit?

Weight loss centers seem to be everywhere, but patients— particularly high risk patients— should be extremely careful when choosing a weight loss clinic. Unfortunately, many centers are merely “pill-popping clinics” staffed by employees with virtually no clinical expertise in weight management. A huge part of their revenue comes from requiring their clientele to purchase numerous mandatory bottles of pills and supplements, ignoring and not addressing the root issues. Obesity is a serious life-threatening condition and there are many who take advantage of the quiet desperation that chronic dieters often feel.

Paperwork

We will e-mail your new patient paperwork before your visit. This paperwork includes a new patient profile and lifestyle, nutritional, and health history. Please complete it at home when you are not in a hurry, as we base many of our decisions in planning your program on the answers you give. You can email it back to us, or print it, fill it out, and bring it to your appointment. If you are unable to complete the paperwork prior to your appointment, please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to complete it at our office.

During the visit

At each patient’s first visit, we perform an EKG, draw your lab, check your blood pressure, obtain your weight, and perform a body composition analysis.

The lab work includes a comprehensive metabolic profile, which assesses vital organ function and electrolytes, a complete blood count to check your iron levels, a lipid profile to check your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and a thyroid function test. If you have had these same tests done in the past 60 days, you may fax (972-423-1699) or bring a copy of the reports so that they do not need to be repeated. We MUST have a copy in your chart at your first visit or we will need to perform these tests during your first visit. Please bring the bottles of all current prescriptions with you along with your pharmacy phone number so that we can keep accurate records. After the testing, the doctor or Nurse Practitioner will complete a medical history and examination. He or she will then work with you to customize a weight loss and management program based upon your lifestyle, food preferences, and goals.

Your custom program

Your personalized program may include prescription appetite suppressants, fat blockers, or other appropriate prescription medications. Prescription appetite suppressants can be used to reduce hunger and appetite, reduce thoughts of food (aversion), and make you feel fuller on smaller portions (satiety). They can increase your ability to adhere to your plan. We do not prescribe amphetamines. We use only FDA approved prescription medications and prescribe according to FDA guidelines and guidelines set forth by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

IHP also offers diet injections, which many of our patients find beneficial. The injections contain adenosine monophosphate (AMP), B-6, and long acting B-12. The injections assist the body in fat metabolism and lead to faster weight loss. If you decide to have the injections, you'll need one each week to maintain a therapeutic level in your system. The price is $25 for 1cc or $35 for 2cc per injection. You do not need an appointment for an injection and may walk in any time during our business hours.

Cost and time investment

Your initial office visit will be approximately 1.5 — 2 hours and the total cost is $200. Your first follow-up visit will be in two weeks and monthly thereafter. These visits usually are 15-30 minutes in length. Follow-up visits are $50. If you bring a copy of EKG and complete lab work (CMP, CBC, Lipid profile, Thyroid profile) done within the past 2 months, your 1st visit will be discounted $30. Complete payment is due at the time the services are rendered. We will provide you with a medically coded receipt for our services, which you may choose to submit to your insurance company. Some insurance programs will pay for all of or part of these services, some won't. You can also submit these to your medical healthcare/flex accounts at work for reimbursement.

PLEASE NOTE: We request that you do NOT bring children to your initial consultation as there is quite a bit of information covered that requires your undivided attention. Your success in this program depends on your ability to understand and implement the concepts presented. We also draw lab work, which can be traumatic for small children to witness. We do not have the staff available to baby-sit your children during your visit.
